7 Self-Care Gems To Maintain Balance In Your Hustle

This song should be your self-care mantra while you work. We are so used to hustling and being on the grind that we neglect our overall wellbeing. I keep saying, you can only give out what you have in abundance. If you are well taken care of, your emotional, mental, love pot will be so full you will have enough to spread out to others if not, you are going to be proffering poor, sloppy, exhausted versions of yourself and this will affect the quality of your work and relationships. Whenever I begin to feel drained, I know it’s only a matter of time before I will feel like I’m just tottering on the edge waiting to drop.

This is what I do whenever I feel like I have reached the edge of myself:

Self-Care is to deactivate my social media accounts

For as long as I feel I need to. I am a content creator, and the nature of this job demands that I troll the streets of social media several hours a day. And I can’t begin to describe to you how exhausting it is to have everything screaming for my attention and if it’s not that, then the stress is coming at me from constantly checking on my competitors and being dragged into the pit of feeling, ‘I am not putting enough work’, even when I know I’m doing my best. One other thing I do is remove myself from group chats-I don’t need all those tons of messages, it’s not good for my mental health. Am I weird for doing this? Adunno, but I’m just doing me.

Having my favourite song on repeat all morning

is soul food and this season it has been Beyonce ft Whizkid ft Saint John ft Blue Ivy Carter’s song, ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that has proven to be my healing balm. The song comes with so much power that after two rounds, back to back, I have the motivation to walk out the door and face my day square in the face. It doesn’t have to be a song that will give you the right energy to tackle your priorities for the day, it could be a TED talk, a motivational message. Just get what works for you.

I don’t have to go to the cinema, I’ll stay home download my own movies and keep my sanity. This is self-care

That’s if you are a home-body. When I’m trying to recharge, I try to stay away from people as much as possible even if it means downloading my own movies and watching them with family or a friend or two. However, if you thrive amid people, then go out with your homegirls, colleagues, family, anything to restore your vibe.

Plan a vacation, even for just a weekend!

It doesn’t have to be expensive, and you don’t have to go far. My holiday could be a whole day with grandma’s or my parents or siblings or a friend. You don’t know what good family time, quality conversations, and good support systems can do to your spirit. Take this time out to re-map your plans, and check your vision board again for clarity. Discuss your projects with loved ones to gain fresh insights-it doesn’t get better than this.

Not comparing myself to another woman

It’s not worth it, Sis. Let her be your motivation and not your competition. Her achievements do not undermine yours, strive to do your best always.

Celebrating my achievements

 even when I feel like I’m moving at a snail’s pace. Every victory is worth a toast and a weird dance around my room. Celebrating yourself imprints on you the confidence to achieve more. You know how hard you worked to get that victory, you know how many ‘No’s’ you received before getting that ‘Yes’, so why are you acting chill about it?

Good Food and I don’t have to be the one to prepare it. But for the girl who likes to cook, you will admit cooking is therapeutic and eating good food is too.
