In-Laws From Hell: Can Two Cross-Cultural Families Join In Marriage & Become Best Friends?

In-Laws From Hell: Can Two Cross-Cultural Families Join In Marriage & Become Best Friends?

There’s no handbook on how to deal with in-laws says, Adanna Steinacker. However, the best approach is to tread with understanding.

Understanding from all parties and clearly defined expectations, and boundaries, stresses David.
For young Nigerian women, the subject of marriage and starting a family can not be broached without an honorable mention given to the ‘in-laws’- mothers-in-law generate the most heat.

I have heard a young woman say, unabashedly, I wish my future mother-in-law is not alive when I want to marry her son.

As shocking as that disclosure is, it doesn’t help to know that so many young women go into marriage with the mindset of going to do battle with their in-laws.

Adanna believes that such antagonism between a mother-in-law(or a future mother-in-law) and her daughters-in-law lie in the fact that most mothers find it hard to come to terms with the reality that they can’t be a Queen in their home and also be a Queen in their sons home.

It’s not that parents don’t want their children to leave and cleave. It’s one of their biggest joys. The challenge is facing the reality that the kids they have brought up for over two decades now belong to someone else.

David says it goes a long way when couples(especially young couples) try to understand their parents in this light.

Also, as much as David and Adanna encourage young couples to have an open and receiving mind towards the in-laws, but to be on the safe side, David says don’t expect them to be your best friends. It may not work out like that, and sometimes it does. But however it turns out, there would be no hurt expectations.

Couples and in-laws can live peaceably. It boils down to mindset, expectations, boundaries, and much more, as discussed below.
