Living Your Best Life Now, Includes Having a Healthy Scalp

No one likes Dandruff. The white flakes that falls on our neck and shoulders are embarrassing. Still, dandruff is only a red flag for something far worse.

Dandruff is a symptom of unhealthy scalp and when the scalp is unhealthy, the hair suffers, leading to breakage and stunted growth.

For us black girls, “Our hair is our pride”, no kidding. One of our Alexiloreans says, “I want my hair to grow very, very long. So I take the pain to style it and not leave it loose, just so it grows long faster. But each time I loosened my braids, my hair came off with it. I was devastated”.

Still, dandruff is only a red flag for something far worse; Hair loss!

Picture brushing your hair and each time you run a comb through it, thick mass of precious (more precious than Gold) black hair comes off. It is horrifying! And very painful. We have been there, gone through it and hopefully with the steps we have, and are still taking, we never get to experience such moments anymore.

Dandruff is dead skin cells on the scalp. Naturally old skin cells are shed off, for new ones to grow. However, when the scalp begins to shed excessively, it needs to be treated.

“For many years I have suffered from dry skin induced dandruff. I knew I had dry skin, that’s why I take extra care in the type of body lotion I use. I didn’t know I had to worry about my scalp too. I saw my dandruff as no big deal. Shampoo and my scalp would be squeaky clean, I thought. However, as my hair dried, the white particles returned. Clearly just shampooing wasn’t working for me anymore. I needed a solution, and I needed it fast”. reveals an Alexilorean.

Other causes of dandruff include:
Poor Diet
Wrong Hair Products
Fungal Infections
High Heat
Oily skin

Nutrition; proper dieting affects everything about our body including our hair. Improper nutrition will cause dandruff, stunted hair growth and breakage. For a healthy hair, you should definitely eat foods rich in zinc, Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and iron. London based clinical nutritionist, Seki Tijani writes, “dandruff can be a sign of deficiencies, particularly in something like essential fatty acids, like the omega 3 oils contained in oily fish. It could also signify that your body is reacting to, or not tolerating something. Ensure you include plenty of fiber from fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet along with water to help clear toxins and boost the health of skin cells”.

Shape Magazine, an American Fitness and Well-being Magazine writes, “lean beef and healthy greens, keep your scalp, dandruff free”.

Oily skin; this is characterized by greasy, yellow flakes and it is known as Seborrheic Dermatitis. This happens when the scalp secrets excess oil. It can also affect oily areas of the body such as the face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest. I guess you are probably shocked right now. Well, it is as we say; “Too much of everything is bad”. In such situations we advise you see a physician.

High Temperature; exposing your scalp to high temperatures, dries off the scalp and results in flakes. If you have dandruff, it is best you lay off or reduce your use of heat styling tools such as curlers, or any heat based product.

Wrong Hair Products; allergic reactions to certain hair products results in itchy, scaly scalp.

De-stress; stress affects your overall health and may even be the cause of your dandruff. Taking time out to relax, will do your hair a lot of good.

“Get a little sun”, says mayoclinic.org. “Sunlight may be good for dandruff. Just spend a little time outdoors and be sure to use sunscreens. Studies have shown that Tea Tree oil can reduce dandruff, though more study is needed”.
