Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans. Sometimes, as was the case of Nigeria’s food and lifestyle vlogger, Yemisi Odusanya (Sisiyemmie), life is what happens when you are just bored in the house bored.
One of the things I firmly hold on to and what I say a lot is that it doesn’t take much for God to turn your life around. And it doesn’t have to be through a huge life event or complicated processes for him to get it done.
Sometimes all you have in your hands is enough. Whether you know now what you have in your hands or not.
In a recent interview with Genevieve magazine, Yemisi Odusanya revealed that the brand that we have come to love so much – Sisi Yemmie – was birthed out of boredom while studying in the Uk, at the University of Birmingham. For her, it was all about keeping herself busy. With friends and family back home in Nigeria, she found solace engaging with the humans on Twitterverse. And her flair for telling stories led to the launch of her very first blog, which has since evolved. She explained:
“I rebranded to Sisi Yemmie and started talking about all things I like; food, lifestyle, travel, and all that. I was always passionate about food, and when I started blogging, I think I talked about my love for food. Everyone was like Sisi Yemmie and food go together. So I thought since I was already associated with food, I might as well take this to another level.”
I bet being a content creator had always been a part of the plan for Sisi Yemmie, who holds a Bsc in Mass Communication, but things falling into place the way it did, even she did not see that coming.
In another interview, she revealed that blogging was a hobby. A side thing she did for fun even after eventually completing her Masters and gaining employment in a bank in the UK.
That’s ‘the life,’ right? “The girl’s good.’
Yemisi revealed however, that she wasn’t fulfilled at all.
“I felt this was not the life I wanted. I came back to Nigeria, and somebody told me he liked my blog, and they were looking for a social media manager. That was how I got my first job in Nigeria. I did not apply, I was just sitting down in my house and thinking of how to get a job, and the job fell in my laps. Did the job for a year or two before I went into full-time blogging.”
Fast forward to date, and Sisi Yemmie is definitely bringing in the dough. The side hustle has become the main chic. What started as a hobby has expanded into a fulltime business, garnering more and more brand recognition, partnerships, endorsement deals, and, most of all, life on her own terms.
Sisi Yemmie is a reminder that it’s okay not to have a mapped out life plan. Or to even have a plan that is not going according to plan – you know what I mean.
There is the pressure to find purpose, discover passion, be successful. And if truth be told, you may not even know how?
A wise person said, ‘the 20s and 30s are a very fragile time. Young people are so focused on trying to merge the pieces of their life together, that the best you can be for them, is be their peace.’
Be your own peace too. Relax. You have every reason to be anxious, but be anxious for nothing(Philippians 4:6-7). Keep committing your life into God’s hands, and one way other, you will find that The lines are fallen unto you in pleasant places; yea, you have a goodly heritage – Psalm 16:6.
