Spending Valentine Alone? If It’s Boring, It’s Your Fault

Spending Valentine Alone? If It's Boring, It's Your Fault

Another 365 days round the sun and valentine is here again. Do you remember how you marked 2020’s valentine? I have no idea how it went down. That information is hazy in my memory since I made the decision to file all the memories of 2020 as a highly classified folder somewhere up here – my brain. 2020 was too much of an exhausting year to want to recall.

2021 is already a better year and not because our economies as individuals and the world at large are running smoothly, but mainly because 2020 flexed our mental, psychological, and emotional muscles and I daresay somehow we’ve adapted to the pressure and we can face anything 2021 brings.

One of the things I mapped out in my subconscious as stepped into this year was simply identify and surround myself with the best people, taking care to celebrate them at any opportunity. If you don’t know, know now a good support system – people who are truly for you – is an essential ingredient to peace of mind.

And this valentine is one such opportunity to love up on MY PEOPLE – AND MYSELF in particular.

Valentine’s day is lovers day but the truth is not all of us are in relationships and this is no reason to have:

  1. A boring day
  2. Hibby-Jibbies over the fear of missing out
  3. emergency holidate(a date just for valentine) – which is adorable if that is what you want and not because of any pressure to show up with a val.

I always tell people, you have options, always. And if you are single on Valentine you can choose to go about your day totally unbothered – intentionally block your five senses sans the D-day. Or valentine yourself, which if you ask me, is the best option.

One month plus into the year and I am willing to bet you’ve been on the grind all through without a moment’s breather. I suggest you grab Feb 14 with both hands and seize the opportunity to spoil yourself silly. Lucky us, it falls on a Sunday.

Consider this your ultimate guide to inexpensive pleasure

Chocolate bars

Studies show that chocolates, especially dark chocolates are a rich source of antioxidants – nutrients that can positively affect your health. These are three main benefits of chocolate according to HealthLine;

  • It is great for your skin – The flavonols found in chocolate can protect against sun damage, improve blood flow to the skin and increase skin density.
  • Improves brain function: cocoa contains stimulant substances like caffeine and theobromine, which may be a key reason why it can improve brain function in the short term. One study of healthy volunteers showed that eating high-flavanol cocoa for five days improved blood flow to the brain
  • Lowers risk of heart disease: a study revealed that eating chocolate two or more times per week lowered the risk of having calcified plaque in the arteries by 32% and eating dark chocolate more than 5 times per week lowered the risk of heart disease by 57%.

So go ahead and indulge in your favourite sweet-tooth.

Delicious meals

From time to time my tastebuds crave a particular food and I have two do one of two things: enter into the kitchen and make a most satisfying meal( thanks to YouTube University and cookbooks) or make an order.
If cooking is a chore you do not have half the mind to do on Sunday, there’s always the option of yummy meals from food delivery services. For Lasgidi and Portharcour dwellers, Myndidia and TheB-Hive Lagos are up to the task of catering to your palate.

With abundant scents that range from watermelon, champagne, floral, lavender, teak, and much more, scented candles will most definitely freshen up your space and positively affect your mood.

Connect to a spiritual community

Many of us are always so busy that our mantra is I forgot to read my bible. A short prayer at the beginning and end of the day just about sums our spiritual life. There’s no time for quiet time. Lovers day is a perfect opportunity to get up to speed spiritually – soak up in his word and hide under the covering of prayer.
This valentine, try as much as possible to connect to a spiritual community. It will help a lot in refreshing your spirit, building your faith, and matching you with like-minded women.

Read a book

If you are anything like me and have a list of books to tackle this year but have had to shelf because of one thing or the other, this is an opportunity to revive the book worm in you, and even discover new paperbacks.
Better still engage with bookish women like Abena.
